Causes of cracks on the surface of cold-rolled stainless steel strip

Some customers will ask why there are sometimes many cracks on the surface of cold-rolled stainless steel strips, what is going on, and how to solve them. Let me introduce to you below.

Cracks are more likely to appear on the surface of the cast strip with a large amount of cold steel, which becomes a frequent area for transverse cracks. The surface condensation of the cast strip caused by the fluctuation of the liquid level of the molten pool of the stainless steel strip, the surface defects of cold steel and the roll, etc. The root cause of transverse cracks on the surface of the cast strip when the speed is inconsistent. In the subsequent cooling and bending process, the surface transverse crack of the cold-rolled stainless steel strip is enlarged and deepened by the tensile stress. These cracks are condensation cracks that occur in the high temperature region where delta ferrite exists.

Ultra-thin stainless steel strip continuous casting can directly cast molten steel into 1-5mm strip, without hot rolling or a little hot rolling (1-2 stands), cold-rolled stainless steel strip can be cold-rolled to produce cold-rolled 316 stainless steel plate. Therefore, it has great competitiveness in saving investment, reducing costs, and improving environmental protection. When transformed into industrial production, there are quality problems in twin-roll continuous casting stainless steel strip, and cold-rolled stainless steel strip, especially surface cracks, is the most important factor affecting its quality.
