Some little knowledge about 430 stainless steel

The name 430 stainless steel comes from the Japanese national standard. It has very good corrosion resistance. It is a general-purpose steel like 304 stainless steel, but it is ferritic stainless steel, and its thermal conductivity is better than austenitic stainless steel, and its thermal expansion coefficient is lower than austenitic stainless steel. In addition, it has good thermal fatigue resistance and mechanical properties in the weld area. In terms of price, because 430 stainless steel is relatively cheap, it can replace 304 stainless steel in many aspects.

The chemical composition of 430 stainless steel contains carbon ≤0.12%, silicon ≤0.75%, manganese ≤1.00%, phosphorus ≤0.040%, sulfur ≤0.030%, nickel ≤0.60%, and chromium content between 16.00-18.00% , Molybdenum element is in the range of 2.00-3.00%.

The surface grades of 430 stainless steel have the following states. With different surface states, the corrosion resistance of 430 stainless steel is also different. Common surface states include NO.1, 1D, 2D, 2B, N0.4, HL, BA, etc.

Let’s talk about the processing technology of various surfaces of 430 stainless steel. Let’s first look at the 1D surface. It has a discontinuous granular shape, also called a matte surface. The processing technology sequence is hot rolling, annealing shot peening and pickling, cold rolling and annealing and pickling.

The 2D surface appears as a slightly shiny silvery white, and the corresponding processing techniques are hot rolling, annealing shot peening and pickling, cold rolling and annealing and pickling.

The surface of 2B is silvery white with better gloss and flatness. Its processing technology is hot rolling, annealing shot peening and pickling, cold rolling, annealing and pickling and quenching and tempering rolling.

The surface gloss of BA is very good and the reflectivity is very high, even similar to the surface of a mirror. The processing technology sequence is hot rolling, annealing shot peening and pickling, cold rolling, annealing and pickling, surface polishing and tempering rolling.

The surface of No.3 has relatively good gloss and rough texture. Its processing technology is to use 100-120 abrasive materials for polishing and tempering rolling of 2D products or 2B products.

No.4 has relatively good gloss and fine lines on the surface. The corresponding processing technology is to use 150-180 abrasive materials for polishing and tempering rolling of 2D products or 2B.

430 stainless steel has a wide range of uses. It is mainly used to make electronic products, tableware, bolts, nuts, screens, etc. It can be made into decorative materials and outdoor advertising columns, and can also be used to make products with stress corrosion resistance requirements. Building decoration parts, fuel burner parts, household appliances, home appliance parts, etc. In addition, because 430 stainless steel has very good corrosion resistance in oxidizing acid solutions, especially nitric acid, it can also be used to make chemical equipment for the production of nitric acid.
