What does ASTM A554 mean?

ASTM A554 is a standard specification published by ASTM International that covers welded stainless steel mechanical tubing. This specification primarily applies to tubing intended for structural, ornamental, exhaust, sanitary, and other applications where mechanical properties, appearance, or corrosion resistance are important, but pressure retention is not the primary focus.

The A554 standard specifies the requirements for various shapes, including round, square, rectangular, and special configurations. It details aspects like manufacturing processes (typically electric-fusion-welded or high-frequency welded), chemical composition requirements for different stainless steel grades (such as 304, 316L, 201), tensile properties, hardness limits, permissible variations in dimensions (tolerances), workmanship, finish, and marking.

ASTM A554 Stainless Steel Tubing

Unlike standards for pressure piping or tubing (like ASTM A312 or A269), A554 tubing is not typically subjected to hydrostatic or nondestructive electric testing unless specifically agreed upon between the manufacturer and purchaser. The focus is more on dimensional accuracy, surface finish (available in various polished or unpolished conditions), and suitability for fabrication processes like bending, forming, and welding. Common uses include architectural railings, furniture, automotive exhaust components, and food processing equipment frames where stainless steel pipe provides aesthetic and functional benefits.
